Congratulations, you’re right… so what?

If you recall, my New Year’s resolution was to read one book a month. Going into the month of May, I have read 8 books, and I am on track to complete 2 more by June. One of the books I am reading now is “How to win friends and influence people,” by Dale Carnegie.

Almost every time I look up “best business books to read,” this book is listed. I can finally understand why. Carnegie’s masterpiece is an easy, fantastic read. Originally, it was written in 1936. Decades later, the principles of human behavior listed in the book are relevant today.

The principles that Carnegie covers are not difficult to digest. Honestly, I believe they’re common sense. The problem is that we tend to be so self-absorbed and self-promoting that we neglect others around us.

Kobe Bryant entered into the National Basketball Association (NBA) straight out of high school at the ripe age of 17. In fact, when he was traded from the Charlotte Hornets, the team that initially drafted him, to the Los Angeles Lakers, his parents had to cosign the trade agreement. He was still a minor after all.

Control whatever you can…yourself

I believe that things you can control, you should. As for the things you cannot control, you should not worry about them. There’s nothing you can do to influence things you can’t control anyway.

There are numerous things in this world that we cannot control:

  • The weather
  • The Traffic
  • Your Genetics
  • What others do
  • What others say
    -Etc.

There also exist a small list of things you can control:

  • Your actions
  • Your emotions
  • Your thoughts
  • Your words

If you take a look at the small list of things you can control, they all have one thing in common…YOU. Nothing has control over you, except for you. For better or for worse, you are the captain of your own ship.
